It has been snowing here and it is very pretty; however, there is one problem, I do not like snow and all the issues here in Eugene that come with it. Travel, icy walks and roads, canceled meetings, etc. Right now the snow has stopped and I am seeing "a patch of blue sky as big as a pair of overalls." I am hoping that Mom's saying of years ago works in the northwest.
Grace Lemon was not related to Mom. Sometime during her high school years, she worked for Grandpa and Grandma Halverson. She worked for room and board. I remember watching her do her shorthand homework if I stayed at the farm. Hard worker, neat and very clean. She was a Dubbe and did have older and younger siblings. I think one of her older siblings was married to a relative of Mamie and John Hagadorn. I know she had family in the Mpls. area. Her family had lived in the back part of the hardware store...I gather they were not super neat as the place was fumigated for bed bugs before the folks moved the business and family in there. The fumigation incident is why I have always associated dirty and bed bugs with each other. Mom was very careful the first year we lived there in watching for bugs. I do not know where she met Don Lemon but as Orrin said she stayed with G and G when Don was sent overseas. He was gone for at least 2 years or more. Terry was born after Don was deployed. Terry was a very tiny baby (4 pounds) but loved G and G. He used to say he "had sada milk (sour milk) and ginger snaps with Grandpa". After Don's discharged they moved to Topeka, Kansas where Don came from originally. They had at least two other children, Judy and Carol. Carol Schaal used to keep in touch with Grace...I had heard she died from Alzheimer's disease. When Grandpa H. died, I think Grace was listed as a foster or adopted daughter. I know she was well loved and that was returned to them.
Yesterday would have been Dad's 111 birthday. Can't even imagine him like that.
If there is a reunion, I need a date and place. Also Joan and Den will be celebrating 50 yrs of marriage this coming June.
Thomas was having tubes put in his ears this a.m., but haven't heard if the snow delayed the process.
Love and Hugs,
