Belated birthday wishes

Belated Birthday wishes to you Carol. I said Happy Birthday to you on our way to Cedar Rapids on Sunday....does that count?
Thanks for the update on your family......

Does the name of Max Pasley, L C Lippert Co ring a bell. Interestingly when we got to the site of the Gospel Mission on Christmas Day it was the site of L C Lippert Co owned and run by Max Pasley. It was the appliance dealership that supplied Anderson Hardware. They always had an open house at least once a year. I am sure Bob and Buzz remember because Pasley owned the McDonalds in Sioux Falls and we would get all we could eat of burgers and fries.

Merry Christmas from SNOWY Red Wing

Thank you all for writing your holiday plans on the blog....love reading them....now, my turn.
Packed for AZ and for Christmas. Heading to Sara's around 11ish. There will not be a lot of room in the car after we get the presents in there......Will be at Sara's until the 28th or 29th. Lisa and Andy and kids will stay until the 28th and then head home. Think Andy has to work on the 29th.
It is a winter wonderland around here...(I think) Al has another saying about it.....he HATES the snow. It is difficult driving on side roads in town as the city has not had time to clean out from the other storms we have had. Al is sounding very much like Dad every time it starts to snow.
Judy, I always wanted to have penny loafers and could not have them as they were to hard on our socks. I know your favorite loafers. They were very much like Als, however, we buried his shoes in Az last winter....they went to the trash. Dennis and Al's nephew, Jack, had a moment on silence for Al's loafers at the next sing a long on our street. In case some of you don't know it.....he kept the holes in the soles filled with gorilla glue and some of the seams of the shoes were sewn with fishing line. It was time for them to go.....
In case you guys did not know this, I HATED THE CHRISTMAS PROGRAM AND SAYING A PIECE. BUT always loved coming home to see that Santa had been there. Remember the time that Dad bought Mom and coat and wrapped it in the ironing board box from the store. She was really fuming to think he bought her an ironing board......remember, all the guys they came into the store and bought their wives irons or something else for the kitchen.
Thanks Orrin for the candle duty.....do they plow the streets in the cemetry or do you have to bite the bullet and go through the snow?
Need to put last things in the car and head out.
Love to all....enjoy this holiday season and thanks for the memories!
Hugs, # 3

Greetings from Sioux Falls. It is a white Christmas. Erick arrived this afternoon and joined Kristin, Rob and myself as we traveled to Luverne to put candles on the graves. They have had significantly more snow there and after putting the candles on the folks graves I started to look for Milly and Lilly. The only sign of it was the top of the plant holder sticking out of a snowdrift. That in addition to the fact the wind was blowing and I couldn't keep the candle burning so they didn't get one this year. On Christmas day Taf,Dan, Tad & Leah will join us working at a local mission before dinner. We have a nice service at 5:00 and then Santa will come. I still remember Christmas Eve at Hardwick and having to be in the Christmas program before we could get home to the presents.

Judy, I will be pulling for the Ducks as I don't care for the Heisman winner. How we make heros out of crooks I'll never know. A friend will be the referee for that game.

A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Orrin

Merry Christmas from Az

It's hard to believe we are back in Az for Christmas. It is to be 70 degrees.
In the past we have had Christmas Eve in Coeur d Alene and Christmas in Az.
We arrived in Az early Dec. We have been busy doing what?
Curtiss arrived the other day for a visit; and Steven, Amanda picked Curtiss up yesterday and headaed for Tucson. The Otten family is cleaning out Grandma Ottens house; as we know is not a fun thing to do. Steven works close to where we live so he stops by to visit and help with anything. He wants to up grade the golf cart to go faster and put on big wheels.
We had a big golf cart parade last week. Everyone decorated their golf carts and we paraded around the resort. I was suprised to see how many people came out of their units to watch and cheer the 39 golf card parade.
Today is Christmas Eve. We will go to Tims this afternoon for church and dinner. On Christmas Day Tim and Dennis are doing a prime rib and all of Debs family will be coming. We come home in the EVE as Dennis preachs at the local church on Sunday. It really suprises me how many people come south this early.
Anyway MERRy CHRISTMAS to ALL. We look forward to Jan and Als arrival and a good winter. Come visit. Dennis and Joan

This Week

Hi To All From Tracy

We are getting ready for a big weekend with every one but Mindy. She still has two months in Tieland before she get back to the USA. Cody, Colton and her mom were over and saw her over T-day for 3 weeks. Mike is going over on the 20th of Jan.

Going to meet Angie in St Peter tomorrow and get Ethan, Sam, and Loren. This is to give her one day to get some shopping done for them and set up there house. Spud is getting off at 12 on Thur and they are then coming to Tracy and staying until Sun. They will also be bring the french intern home that has been staying with them sense late Aug. She is a pratuce teacher at the kids school for the year. She goes to a different home at the end or middle of Jan. Very quite person.

Mike and boys are coming home on Christmas day. They have a family Christmas at there home on Christmas eve

The dinner menu will be turkey, ham. dressing, potatoes (mashed and sweet) Calf blend, cream corn (home froze), Lefsa, buns, and few other things. After that it is open gifts and take a nap. For evening meal we will have sandwich's and some wild rice soup. Sorry but on Christmas eve we will have the pork in butter BBQ sauce, chip and orange and cherry jello.

Tired of the snow but that is life in MN. I think it has gotten worse from the windmills on buffalo ridge.. Will work on a chrism as letter after the big day and get it out.

Hope you all are able to enjoy family and have a safe time. Judy: glad you enjoy the ice breaker. Ole went ice fishing and came home with 50 LBS of ice. Lena almost drowned tyring to cook it. O: great picture of you and the new family member

Hugs to all

PS: Got my Hardwick wildcat t-shirts the other day.

December Goings and Comings!

Hi Sibs, In-laws, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, etc.

I just came home after completing several errands. I located a shoe repair shop in west Eugene and they were able to save my favorite pair of penny loafers. Does anyone remember that Mom didn't like slip on shoes i.e. loafers as the motion of the shoes going up and down wore out your socks faster. I think that is why I have the passion for the real penny loafer. I hit my favorite coffee shop and picked up an apple-cinnamon bagel which is very good considering I do not care much for cinnamon. Attempted to get Lyman off the Dept. of Motor Vehicles listing...didn't succeed. Have to have his death certificate. He has been called for jury duty and the only way to have that not happen is to have him certified deceased. The courts did excuse him when I informed them that he was no longer with Lane County Residents anymore...in other words, he is no longer online! THEN to the U of O book Store and in case you do not know, the Oregon Ducks will be playing for the National Championship in early January in the Phoenix area. I have never seen so much Oregon paraphernalia in one place...I lucked out as most of it was 25% off. The young checker said it was a mad-house right before the students went home for break. I do not think I have ever been associated with a school that had a perfect 12-0 record.

Janna and Rivers have been in Belize...they return on midnight of the 22nd. Rivers parents will be with them on Xmas. They have been to two Mayan Ruins, Valley of Peace (a valley financed by a wealthy man for El Salvadorian Refuges) and done some snorkeling (her first time). She would like to bring home the monkey that hangs around their hotel. Thank goodness for custom rules. Patrick has been in India for ten days. He has been in a city near Lucknow studying the Shea Muslim people. He was able to attend an Indian wedding reception, watch the Ashira Celebration parade and meet some interesting people. Will be fun to talk with him when he returns. I always like to see all the pictures that he takes. Jayne has been with the two "little people" by herself and it has gone well. Even with Thomas getting a 24 hour flu. I plan to drive to Tacoma on the 23 and come home on the 27th. Will see Janna and Rivers sometime the next week.

Katherine is in Pre-K and hearing Bible stories. She asked their neighbor if she had ever heard of a man named Joseph and a lady named Mary. Louise said "Did they have a baby named Jesus?" We have a little news spreader among us.

Bob, I liked the Norweigan ice breaker...very clever. To each of you I send my love and wishes for a Joyous Christmas and the Happiest of New Years. I remember a xmas sermon of a few years ago when the pastor said that the wonderful thing about the cradle of Christmas was that it became the cross of Easter. God's Choicest Blessings to all.

Hi Cousins

Milt and Carol are wishing all of you a Very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. We are doing well and hope you are too. I love reading the Blog. Gert Brynes sold her house on the edge of Hardwick to the family that runs the elevator in Hardwick. Gert moved to Luverne. I would love to see the pictures taken at Wes birthday party of people from Hardwick. We go to Ron and Lisa for Christmas dinner. Danette won't be home for Christmas, but will be home to give a shower for Ashley, Stan and Dawns daughter, and again for Ashley and Ryans wedding April 29th. I plan to go to Fl., sometime before April, to use up airfair money I have comming. Milt chooses to stay home this time. We flew to Fl. in April and enjoyed walking on the beach, on the gulf. Also enjoyed seeing Danette and Genes Condo on the beach and spending time with Dakota. She was 2 Nov. 26th. Gods Blessings Milt and Carol

Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Jan, there is still an elevator operating in Hardwick. In fact when Karen and I went to Wes' birthday party it appeared as if they handle a lot of grain even though all needs to be transported by truck. We have a little snow, but most of the snow starts around Luverne. Not much new is SxFls. Best of luck to Uncle Al with his surgery.

Hardwick elevator

Is there still an elevator in Hardwick? We had a beautiful snow fall Friday night.....if there would have been some wind it would have been a good blizzard. Saturday morning woke up to beautiful winter wonderland. There is someone is this house that does not see anything beautiful in snow. Sounds alot like Dad in his later years. Al is having cataract surgery tomorrow morning...(Monday) Second surgery on other eye will be on the 22nd. Suppose to take about half and hour. Sure has changed since your first surgery, right Judy. I know Joan has also had this surgery....anyone else?
Jan #3
The Johnson who was at the table accross from Bill Clausen and myself owned the elevator. What I got from the conversation was when Cargill's lease was at its end he purchased the property from Earl Scott. Said he run the evlevator for over 30 years.

Pie

Hi All

Just got back late last night from a week trip. Went with another driver and we delivered two truck to South Plainfield NJ. We left Mon morning and delivered Wen morning. It rained all the way through PA and the next morning in NJ. What should have taken us 1 1/2 hours on Wen took us 4. The trucks also only went 55 MPH max.
I forgot to tell you that the sweet potatoes need to be cooked. I back them in the oven with a light coat of butter on the skins. Don't wrap them in foil. If using glass pie pans add more time to the baking.
Have you ordered your Hardwick Wildcat T-Shirts yet? I got one ordered for Rosie also.
Bob (TBS)
PS: O who was the Johnson that doing all the talking when you were setting with Bill C?

Sunday, November 28, 2010

I seem to be the last report on Thanksgiving. We were at Tad's for Dinner. A realatively quiet day. Josh was there, but Tafney and Dan in Aberdeen. As far as news. There have been some questions about Doyle Schuler as I believe Judy had seen his obit on line in the Argus web site. He was a classmate, team mate and for a time a room mate at Augustana. A really good person. Cadiac arrest. Had no history of heart problems, but had been a diabetic for over 40 years. Many of the old classmates returned for the funeral so it was rather bitter sweet. On the bright side Josh just landed a job with a company in Sioux Falls and will be moving this Saturday. Orange City, IA is really a nice community, but working nights didn't give him much opportunity to know the community. Also thanks Bob for all the pictures of Wes Pierson's party. Everyone asked where the balance of the Andersons were living and how they were doing. They all hope that there will be Andersons at the Hardwick reunion in June of 2011. Many of the houses are still occupied, but also a lot of change. Erick is coming home for Christmas and we will be going back for a short time. Other than that just getting ready for the holidays.

After Turkey day

Hi All
Belated Turkey day wishes to all. We were all at Lisa and Andy's. Sara and Mark and family came to Mpls on Tuesday night to avoid the ice roads predicted forWednesday. Good thing they came early...would have had to drive on ice as they came into MN around Albert Lea and into Mpls. Josh was suppose to have BB practice at 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday but was excused from practice so they could beat the weather. Buzz, Linda, Tait, Kris and Megan came for dinner on Thursday. Fun time to hear about their jobs and Tait's college classes etc. Had time after dinner to play some dominoes....kids and all. Cooper and Issy were in heaven...as they would play dominoes all day.
Mentzers left around 4 on Friday as they were having Mark's family at their house this weekend...and Nate had a BB tourney. Al went back to RW to announce the girl's BB tourney and I got to stay at Lisa's and play with kids and help Lisa make lefsa. Used your recipe Judy and it turned out really well. Going back to RW tomorrow after church ...have to get ready for my bridge club that I am hosting on Monday. Have played in this bridge for over 30 years.
Fun reading about everyone's holiday.....lets keep this up.
Andy's dinner was wonderful....way to much food etc. Bob, where did you learn to make sweet potato pie?

Happy T-Day

From Tracy MN we wish you all a happy Turkey day. It is starting or has been sleeting for about an hour. We (Rosie and I) are not worried as no one is coming home for T-Day. Mindy and the boys are in Ti eland and Angie, Spud go north this year. Mike has a chance to work and get double time + 8 hours comp time. Wants to use that when he goes to see Mindy after Christmas. Mindy said it is going good and will be there 3 more months. Rosie and I have been invited to the neighbors up the street for Dinner. I have the Lefsa made, Made banana bread this morning. Made (In oven now) 2 sweet potato pies. She requested that I also bring up some deviled eggs. Boil and peeled 12 eggs and just need to mix up the yokes. Not sure how good it will be as talking with her yesterday she told me she had the mashed potatoes done. Today she told Rosie that she had 1 of the turkeys done. ????? Looks like I'm eating leftovers for dinner. Have a great one and stay safe

We must have 5-10 of snow. I am suprised that the low temps.
We will be home with Gretch Andy and family here.

Thanksgiving

Dear Sibs and sib-in-laws,

Wanted to say "Have a great Thanksgiving with family, friends or pull-ins that have no where to go."

I suggested to Janice last evening that we exchange July 4th and Thanksgiving date. We wouldn't have to deal with the weather and all of the encompusing icy roads and snow. I did get about an inch last evening, but people are driving by. Janna called and she didnt have school today which is all right as she has a awful sounding cold. Jayne and Patrick plus two are driving down i-5 later today if the weather stays the same. I haven't cooked a turkey in sometime so the main dish will be a real surprise. As long as the stuffing turns out, I am fine. Love you all,

Judy

Hardwick Birthday

Hi All

Good to see that everyone is doing good. Been busy this month. Delivered a truck to Houston TX on the 1st. Just got back from delivering a truck to Elkridge MD and returned with one for warranty work. Received a note from Patty Pierson last week that she was having a surprise birthday party for Wes (The Unoffical Hardwick Historian) on the 20Th. (It is his 70Th like someone else we know). It is not a surprise anymore as I heard yesterday that she had an add in the Luverne Announcer. If you go to the Rock County Star you will see a add on the top for the announcer. Check out the last page (8). Rosie and I hope to go down but got a call last night that her cousin lost her husband to cancer. Rosie and her grew up 2 miles apart in Jasper.

Check out the add

PS: Happy B-day to you O

SCARY

It is very interesting to realize that all of our neices and nephews children see us like we saw our aunts and uncles. Like Judy said "How did we get this old?
Jayne had a slow bath tub so I heated a couple pans of water and poured down the drain. When Gretch picked me up at the airport she said "Guess what I did, Grandma Esther would be proud of Me" Her drains were running very slow so she put HOT water down them all and plans to do it on a regular basis. #2 Joan

TACOMA

WELL last week Jayne and Pat went on a whirlwind tour for alumni. Judy said she would child sit and asked me to come over.
It went pretty good. By the time Thurs nite arrived we had bedtime rountine down. Jayne had printed out a detailed schedule for us. This was necessary as Thomas goes to Ktgn and Katherine goes to pre K. They go to the same school; but different times and days.
They have both grown up quite a bit since I'd seen them. Katherine really reminds me of Janna. Both Thomas and Katherine are very busy 4 and 6 year olds. Thomas a has to figure out most things in #'s or percents. They wanted to go to a specific MacDonald with a play land. He directed us there. Judy over cooked the corn dog. She set the mico for 9 minutes. It smoked and really pennetrated the air. It was a good time seeing Judy, Jayne, Thomas, Katherine and Pat. Joan

Follow Up to Question

Jan, I'll send invites to Kari and Buzz & Linda as well. Thanks for posting. Sorry I didn't see it sooner. It's been a stressful month with my company as my partner and employee hit the road. So I'm trying to re-build and restart. Has been going well other than the ever-present sensation of drowning. Keep me in your prayers.

Farming in Worthington MN

Got to spend a week helping Darren Bauman with the fall field work. He and his dad (Rosie's brother Loran) were combining the corn. To say this was work and dirty would not be true. The cab is very air tight and very driver frendly. After you get in the field you hit setup on the GPS, hit a button to save current location drive 200 to 300 FT. Hit another button to save that location, hit run, and a button on the stearing wheel. You than take your hands off the wheel and set back and drink some coffee. When you get to the end you grab the wheel, lift the chisel plow, turn the tractor around, drop the plow and hit the button on the wheel. again you let the GPS stear the tractor. You just are there to make sure it has no trouble. It beep when you get near the end to let you know it is time to go back to work.
This is the GPS screen and control box. The black box is the tractor. The line is the direction you are going. As you go done the field and hit a bump and move right or left the line will move that direction and the wheel will correct the tractor. It is just unreal. The last day I was just driving semi-truck s back and forth to the field to haul back the minnesota gold to the farm. It is a very very good year for this harvest. both the corn and beans. The week befor I delivered a truck to Stella NC> Been driving just about every week at least two days and a couple of all week trips.

Beautiful weather in Red Wing........trees are at their peak. Angie and family drove to Red Wing last Sunday and climbed Barn's Bluff and then took me on a new adventure.......letterboxing.
They went on a scavenger hunt on the bluff called Memorial Park to look for a special little box hidden amongst the trees....(they had directions off the internet where to find this special little box) Anyway, after walking 50 steps down this path....stopped looked for a special fallen tree and hidden in the bottom of the tree trunk found a metal box with a Red Wing stamp and a notebook to add their names and family stamp. Each of the kids have their own notebook so they stamped in the Red Wing stamp. Really clever...guess everyone knows about this but me....but what a great family outing.

Danette Gene and little Dakota are living on the Gulf by Tampa Fl. in Indian Rock Beach Dakota will be 2 Nov. 26th. Her adoption was final in March so our whole Family went to Colorado Springs for the hearing. What a blessing she has been. Love Milt and Carol

Today while filling up the Jeep at a gas station I noticed a lady having a problem with the gas pump. I offfered to help and after the transfaction was completed she thanked me and explained that her husband was in the car, but was suffering dementia and had been at the Drs office. She went on to explain that they lived in a retirement home in Pipestone. When I told her that I grew up in Hardwick she said that they had farmed three miles West and a little South of Hardwick. When I asked their name she said Howard Aanenson. I just can't remember that farm place. Bob or Buzz do you remember them. I just remember the Aanensons that lived South of Hardwick off of the road to the Blue Mound State Park.

My turn to brag. Pictured above is Angie's 10 year old Ethan (in Red)running a 5 K with his dad (in gray). This was on Labor Day in Tracy. Spud runs every year but this is the first time for E. Ethan finished the 5 K at 29Min and 2 Sec. Spud went on and ran another 5 doing the 10K (top picture) doing it in 54:48, 4Th in his age group. They run the same 5K twice for the 10K. His time would have been better but he ran the first 5 with Ethan. Ethan took second in his age group. This is the second 5K that he has run. He also was second in that race. Don't remember the time of that 5K.

Tafney and her husband, Dan, interviewed by the local news for the Sioux Falls Marathon held on Sunday, September 12th.

Minnesota

Yesterday 9-9-10 I was at the Dr in Spokane having my yearly check up. There was a nurse from Walla Walla Washington visiting and watching my test. Anyway she happed to mention she was from southwest Mn. Guess what? She graduated from High School in Worthington; but had lived in Luverne till she was about a Jr in high school. Her maiden name was Lawrence and while they lived in Luverne her family ran the movie theater and the Manato Hotel. They lived above the movie theater in Luverne. I think she was Bob or Buzz age. She knew Randi Scott and talked about a big feast that BJ had with a beer truck and a lot of meat. Small world. Joan

After two days Rosie and My were able to can (jar) 15 Qt's tomatoes, onion, celery, and zucchini to use in hot dishes. We were also able to do 13 Qt's of Diablo. I use this as a sauce on chicken breasts. Going to try it sometime on pock chops. Unless we buy some tomatoes we are done for the year on tomatoes. We have to go to Sleepy Eye and get some corn to freeze some cream corn. We will do a roaster full for us and the kids. I had planed to try and do up some three bean salad but I was unable to grow any green or yellow beans. As fast as the plant pop out of the ground some bug would eat it. Seem everyone had this problem. Maybe when we go to Angie's we will hit the farmers market to see what the price is. As you can see in the picture that at the end of the day Rosie had a Vodka/Tonic and I had my Vodka/Seven. I also was able to mow our lawn and the lawn next door. Also washed the car and went out with Rosie's cousins to Kimbree for dinner Sat night. They are from SD and have there camper on Lake Shetek. Kimbree is between and east of Worthington and Fulda. The steaks are very close to Mag. Have a good week

I have been trying to respond to the questions. If I am repeating myself it is because I don't think my responses have been posted. If they have and I am just not reading it correctly you get the response twice.

When they got Karen's purse they went through it and found the ticket to the parking ramp. As there are two or three ramps connected to the Marriott they just went to each cashier and asked how much was owed on the ticket. When the got to the correct ramp they simply took the car out the entrance. I do believe they got good pictures of them, but I would suppose that they don't have time to pursue every one of these deals. In response to Bob's question about Carol and Milton and water problems. They should be in areas that are fairly high and new enough construction where there basements are tiled. Unless they don't have pumps or the pumps aren't running they should be fine. Most of the problems with sewage backup was about one to two blocks South and continuing East about four blocks. After helping a few people haul carpet, pad and furniture out of their lower levels the theft of a car really wasn't that big of a deal. Much easier to deal with then what some neighbors were dealing with. Bob meeting somewhere between is a great idea. Put in on the list for early in Nov.

One question......how in the world did they find your car to steal? Really sorry that happened to Karen......and you. Just glad they didn't hurt her physically........Hope they didn't get into your checking account.....

Bob, in response to your question. We are dry and just live a couple blocks North of one of the areas that really get wet. The city spent 40 million dollars a few years ago to eliminate this ever happening again, but something didn't work.

On another note Karen and I had an interesting three days in Minneapolis. I have always wanted to attend a National Organization of Sports Officials annual meeting. This year it was in Minneapolis so I signed up. Went thru Rochester on the way up as Tafney had tests during the week which all turned out to be negative. We had a early dinner with her and proceeded to the site of the meeting. Sunday evening was mostly social and started early on Monday. Karen spent the day in the shopping area and we did a scheduled social on Monday evening. Karen planned on going to the Mall of America on Tues and I went to my sessions. About 10:00 I get notice that Karen needs to see me. This couldn't be good news and it wasn't. Seems she was waiting for the light rail and some fleet footed young man took her back pack off her shoulder. She made the police report and come an got me. We did an inventory of her contents and decided we should alert the parking area of the theft and that there was a set of car keys involved. Alerted the Bank and put out a fraud alert. Karen went about the downtown area and I went back to my sessions. Had a nice banquet Tues night and prepared to ck out Wed AM. We needed to get back to SxFls for a friends funeral. I went to put bags in the car on Wed AM and it was gone. Seems the two individual had taken it as we were putting out the alerts. Called a friend in SxFls that has a VW/Audi dealership and he aranged a car to get us back. Got back in time to find out what we needed to get a drivers license and other cleanup items. I got the 1974 VW Bug out of storage and waited. Just got a call at 4:30 today that the car had been found and was in the City impound area. I am not sure how we get it back. The insurance adjuster had idicated that if it was found they would transport it backi to Sioux Falls. We are pleased because it is a very nice vehicle and expense to replace.

All is well at this time.

Al and I have to be at the Groom's dinner but won't be there all night.

As to the Saturday. First of all what time does everyone think they will arive at the Hotel? We could then have all people in the Minn, SD & Iowa bring some type of cold dish. If that is ok we could then find a local supermkt that would cater hot food to go with it. The second would be to have a local outfit cater the whole thing, but that would not be a good and cost quite a bit more. What are your thoughts?

TRAVEL

We are on our way home to Idaho. We had another good winter; altho cooler and a lot of rain.
When Jonathan came to visit he couldn't get over how green it was.
We bought a park model next to Jan and Al; so we are driving the motorhome home to sell. Our children highly recommended this move.
I really enjoy spending the winter with Jan. In the am we ususally have a cup of coffee and conversation to start the day.
Can you believe I am writing this as we travel along the road. We are headed for Hwy 90 near B;utte, Mt and then west to Coeur d' Alene. We hear is it cool and rainy in CDA. When we get home we have to empty the motor home; so I'm sure we will be busy for quite awhile.
Looking forward to seeing all at Kristophers wedding. Joan

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Hi All,

I am waiting for five people to come to my house so watch a DVD about an artist. I didn't realize how small my tv area is for six. Hopefully, it will still work.

I had a great birthday. At eleven I met 3 friends for a brunch type outing at a pancake house near the University. Played Mah Jongg from 1:30 to almost 5:00. Then Joann and I went out to dinner at a favorite place called The Rabbit. They think of themselves as a French Bistro type place so you don't want to go there if you need to eat and run; however, Joann and I always seem to have things to talk about so the time goes by quickly. I had bridge at my house the day before so came home and ate a piece of yesterday's desert. Rum cake with whipped cream.

I haven't decided about Kristofer's wedding. Patrick will be returning to Iran for two weeks the 16th of May. I was planning to stay with Jayne and the kids for several days. Then June 5th is an Alzheimer's day conference here in Eugene. The main speaker will be Lyman's doctor at Oregon Health Science Center from Portland. Dr. Quinn does clinical appointments but also does much research. He will be speaking on the latest discoveries and advances. I am kind of a semi host to both him and Lori Sweeney the development director of the Neurology departments. I am going to Tacoma on the 25th of March for grandparents day at Thomas's school and so will discuss all of that and work out a schedule.

Marj will be moved to Madison, SD by then and would very much like to see her new place, but that may have to wait. We are having a 'going away' gathering tonight. I made desert this a.m...
English Triffle. Just have the whipped cream to do yet.

I need to put on the coffee and move a couple of chairs.

Sunny days to all of you, plus good healing and health.

Judy,th card is in the mail. Seems as if it always was a snow storm. The menu would include Baked Beans and Cinimon Rolls. Hope you had a good day. Did you do anything special on your Birthday.
The weather here has finally moderated and the ground is showing. There should only be large piles of snow on the ground by the weekend. Flooding is very moderate at this time. We have had very little sunshine and the days it does shine everyone perks up a bit.

Kristopher's Wedding would be a great time to get together. Hope we can all make it.

Orrin

March

BELATED BIRTHDAY WISHES TO SISTER JUDITH.
We are finally having some very nice weather. Sun and 70 to low 80.
Lisa, Andy, Cooper and Olivia we here for a long weekend. Lisa was very patient and letting all the grandma and grandpas enjoy the kids. Cooper is still such a little gentleman and enjoyed dominos, swiming, golf cart and moped. Jan slept with him in the motor home one night.
Olivia is a charmer and full of it. She is going to keep her family life exciting. She smiles, talks walks and wears two pony tales on the top of her head. They tied the cabinet doors so she couldn't open them all the way. She slams the doors open and closed with lots of noise and a smile.
This is a survey: Who is going to Kristofers wedding?

happy st urho day

hope you have a great st urho day. rosie said that i can not make the meal for st urho day.

St. Urho, Grasshopper Chaser

Menahga, Minnesota
Menahga, honors St. Urho (Pronounced "oorho"), the patron saint of Finland, with a bizarre statue recreating his mythical battle with giant grasshoppers. He is reputed to have used his "splendid and loud voice" to chase the grasshoppers out of pre-Ice Age Finland (when the climate was much milder) and save the grape harvest. The Finns love him.
At least, the ones in America do. St. Urho was reportedly invented in the 1950s by a couple of Minnesota Finns as a joke. Today it's taken seriously enough that St. Urho Day (the day before St. Patrick's Day) is officially recognized in all 50 states.
St. Urho was originally supposed to be carved out of a one-ton block of laminated oak in 1975, but a Minneapolis woodcarver took Menahga's money and never delivered. In 1982 Menahga gave the block to Jerry Ward, a traveling chainsaw sculptor, and he finally produced their 12-ft tall St. Urho. Oddly, the statue now standing along Hwy. 71 is a fiberglass replica; the original is stored in a mausoleum in the Menahga cemetery.
We do not recommend the traditional summer night visit. The statue is the only well-lit milestone along thirty miles of highway, and the air is thick with mosquitoes. We ask: who is Menahga's patron saint, who will drive all the blood sucking bugs out of Minnesota?

One St. Urho statue is not enough. There's another in Finland, MN, along Highway 1. It's an "interpretive" Urho, very much like an arty Peter Toth Indian head, carved by the late Don Osborn in 1982. It was originally planned to be 30 feet tall, but the wood was rotten, so its 18 feet will have to do.
Urho has a grasshopper on his hat, no body, and he's poorly positioned facing north, assuring mediocre photos in all seasons. Actually, we preferred the statue across the street -- a 10 foot long chainsaw sculpture of a fish holding a beer keg.

Finland hosts a St. Urho's Day Celebration in mid-March.

Big Swede

I'm still not real crazy about going to the dentist and my local dentist is a good friend of our........actually have had many root canals and my last one....in Cottage Grove at an Endodontist was really nice.....no pain. At our first meeting I told him I was a basket case in a dentist chair......he commented...."Most people are..including me"
Have a question.....What was Big Swede's real name....help?
#3
Yes, I did bite the dentist. The lady that we rent from in AZ is originally from Jasper and you guessed it....her dentist was Dr Pizzaro.
In reference to Dentists

Yes we did draw numbers to see what order we went into the chair. Also when the person exited we always needed to know what they had done. Jan did bite I believe the father. In reference to root canals. Quite frankly no pain and when it is done the tooth feels better than ever. I couldn't believe the first time I went to a dentist other than Jasper and nothing hurt. Bob I do remember the old drills. They just vibrated in your mouth. When your feet come off the chair then you got some relief, but not before. I think we need to thank our parents for the dental care we got, because it was every six months which had to be expensive for them. Judy the player if from Portland. McCaffery.

i thought i was the only one to have a phobia with dentist. rosie also tell stories of going to him. you got out of a morning of school but it was not worth it. i was telling the therapies the other day about going to him in the late 50's and he would never used Novocain. she had just gotten a cap. i told her that at the base of the chair was a bike wheel with peddles. when he had to drill you had to peddle the wheel and it ran the drill. when he hit the wrong spot and it hurt you would stop peddling. i tell this story but this was the first time that someone believed me. when the son started buzz and i would always hope we got him. he also thought if he talked about girls it would not hurt. i busted a tooth when i fell this dec but have been putting off the visit. i m sure your visit judy will go good and you can go out and have a steak. tried to reply but there is no spell check when you reply. we must be living wrong judy as all we got to talk about is health issues.

Emergency Visit to a New Dentist

Hi All,

Last Sunday a tooth (Number 31 according to the dentist) had a slight ache. I haven't had a tooth ache in years so I was somewhat surprised. By Sunday night, the tooth was making quite a fuss. When I called my usual dentist, I got a message that he was out of the office for two weeks.
He would be back on Monday, March 8th. There was referral to 3 dentists taking his calls. I have a great phobia with dentists so thought maybe I could tough it out for seven days...no luck.
By Tuesday a.m. I left at message at Dr. Vodvarka's office to talk with one of the staff when they checked the messages. Late afternoon I received a call telling me that Drs. Dreyden and Bitner were very careful, also endodontists, and to check with them. They could get me in immediately.
I opened my mouth to have Dr. Bitner exclaim, "My, you have had a lot of dental work, especially crowns and veneers." As if I wasn't totally aware of that! Long story short I have an obsessing tooth. He prescribed a strong antibiotic which by now (Friday) has been working rapidly and I have very little pain. Tuesday a.m. while you are having your morning coffee break, I will be having a root canal. Actually, I am looking forward to getting this over with.
I am wondering if this tooth has been slowly getting worse and that is why I have had two episodes of bronchitis this year, plus an attach of diverticulitis. How many of you have a dentist phobia? I chalk alot of it up to Dr. Perizo (sp) and those visits to his office. I thought it was pure hell sitting in that waiting room waiting for Eva the nurse to open the door and invite one of us in next. We did barter for who went first, second, etc. didn't we? I haven't been to a dentist since then whose office smelled like his or was quite as green in color as his. Orrin, what is the name of the Oregon kid and I may be able to tell if he is from the western part of the state.
Have a great weekend every one.

xoxox, Judy

Emergency Visit to a New Dentist

Sunday, February 28, 2010

Joan, it is good to hear that you are on the mend. What is it with AZ. Last year it was Jan. One thing about the cold and snow we have no germs. Karen's surgery was on her foot. Everything is fine and with a little luck she will be wearing a shoe after this Friday. Bob, I have heard that the therapy can be a little though, but well worth the effort. Not a lot of news from this area. Just waiting for warmer weather. If it dosen't warm up early in March we may have high water in this area. Right now the topic of discussion in Sioux Falls is Pot Holes on the streets. I don't think we have to worry about spending money on anything else. Judy, Augie has a freshman basketball player from Oregon. Really quick and fun to watch. Can't say what city he is from. Haven't seen a post from you lately.

Just wanted everyone to know that Joan is back among the living. She went to the emergency room last Wednesday afternoon (after we had attended the Luverne winter reunion....knew she did not feel good as she let me drive) She was diagnosed with pneumonia and they kept her for about 6 hours giving her IV's of antibotics. She had the choice to stay or come home and she chose to come home loaded with drugs and cough medicine. She has not felt good for quite awhile so happy to see her feeling better. Hasn't been out shopping for over a week.......

Attended the funeral for Carlis with Clare VandeVelde, Buzz and Linda. It was a very nice service. The church is a very neighborhood church and the service was well attended. The nices and nephews all read scripture that Carlis had assigned to them. Bruce Anderson said with as many scriptures that Carlis liked if there were more than five immediate relatives we would be there a long time. Of course the music was great. Patty looked good and was gratefull that we were able to attend. There were a few people from Luverne, but I didn't know any of them. Doris Schoon was there from CA. It was interesting to visit with her. She lives very close to Disneyland and Carlis had taken the kids to Disney World and stayed with her. Dell was not there, but the kids said she is doing well. Mary and her husband now live in DesMoines, IA. Bruce and his family, Julie and Dell remain in Texas. Patty's two boys are very outgoing much like their father. Richard looks about the same and is not lost for words, but very nice. Mary's husband took a lot of pictures and Bruce is going to email them. I will forward upon receipt. Weather remains very snowy and it looks as if we will have a cool week.

We have some sad news to report.....Andy's father passed away on Sunday afternoon. While it is difficult to say good-by to a wonderful gentleman we rejoice that he is no longer in pain. Andy and his sister and brother have been in Battle Lake helping take care of him for the last three weeks. Lisa, Cooper and Livi will join him tomorrow (Tuesday) for the reviewal and the funeral on Wednesday. Finally I can post to the blog

After two years I am finally able to post on the Blog. What is new in Sioux Falls is cold and snow. This mornings news reported that the new record of -30 breaks the record set in 1974. This week looks to be cold all week, but then again clear crisp air. I do have some comments on questions that have been discussed recently. The cat that we had before Porky was Slippers. It was run over outside the store one evening. The question on the water system has been cleared up. It was in the fire station and it was a pressure system which was rather unusual. I remember Ben Lewis and I believe Richard Goettsch cleaning the huge tank once a year. The recent three day snow storm reminded me of the Baked Beans and Rolls that Mom always made during those storms. I also remember Dad getting the stove that heated the hardware store so hot it would glow red. Don't know what kept the blding from burning down. I will close by saying Judy I picked the Ducks over Ohio State.
