We will be gathering in Portland at a motel and going out to eat at the Shilo Inn Buffet....something for everyone especially the two little ones.   We, of course, have too many things planned for two days.   Al, this is the same Shilo Inn where you especially liked the coconut shrimp.  Have a great day with family and/or friends.   Judy

Bean Sandwiches

We make bean sandwiches....they are one of Al's favorites. Only, I toast the bread first, and broil some of the bacon. After I put it together, broil it again until bacon is done and then turn broiler off and bake for about 10 minutes (or however much time I have). Just told Judy that I thought the "Bean Sandwich" came from Aunt Milly when Buzz got hurt. She was taking care of us and fixed those for us.....Introduced them to one of our friends and they add pepperoni to the sandwich to jazz it up.
Heading to the Hollydazzle parade in Minneapolis today. Going with some women on a charter bus. Thank goodness it is not below zero!!!
Holiday plans??????? or should we read them on facebook......

Grandma Halverson's little black book

Grandma Halverson had this small black book, smaller than a 3 x 5 index card. It is filled with a variety of items that she felt important including recipes, a couple of saying, chicken feed scratch, birthdays, anniversaries and addresses.

" A drinking driver never thinks. A thinking driver never drinks."

Jr. Graduate card: Here is what you have all ready done. And here's what you will do. On coming days as you work and plan to make your dreams come true. Congratulations. The world has need of a Graduate like you.

The Bean Sandwich Recipe:

Cover a slice of bread with butter. Cover with backed (baked) beans and on top put on grated cheese and bacon and back (bake) in oven about 350 and back (bake) till cheese is melted and bacon crisp.

Mom always added slices of sweet pickle and broiled the sandwich. When I started thinking about it, I realized that the cook stove that Grandma used probably didn't have a broiler. SO, I am concluding that Grandma Halverson either made the bean sandwich or just copied it in her little black book. I make one for myself every once in awhile. I know Joan and Den usually make them. Does anyone else carry on the tradition of the "Bean Sandwich".

Grandma's spelling wasn't the best. Backed for bake, Jone for Joan, Witch for which, etc. I sometimes wonder how much schooling she was able to have in her youth.

Witch 4 presedents were not citiciens of the United States: George Washington, Tomas Jeffersen, John Adams, James Monrow.

20 lb. fineley cracked corn
20 lb. finely cracked wheat
10 lb. steel cut oats

Augie Homecoming

Judy

It was Augie's Homecoming last weekend. A friend was singing in the Alumni Chior at a service on campus Sunday AM so Karen and I attended. It was neat so I think it will be a regular event in our future. As we left we run into a friend from the class of 61 who was celebrating their 50 year reunion. As we visited she said that there was her room mate that we would remember. It was Sandy Haugan (I don't know here married name) I told her that Karen and I had stayed with her brother and sister in law and when we were shown the room, her wedding picture was in the room. She asked your name and when I told her she said that she knew you well and that you were such great friends of her brother and sister in law. She also said you had taught her how to make soup at a quilting event. She wanted to know how you were and to say hello. On another note as I looked at the Football program I see a Chris Bollen from Eugene, Ore is a Freshman on the team.

Hope all is well.

Anniversary

We had a great anniversary 50 years. Never thought we'd live this long or make it to 50.
On the 10th we played dominos with friends. The 12th we had cake at church between services. Then on the 17-18 all the kids and grandkids were here. We took pictures, talked and ate. One Sunday am we went to church and then gathered at the Resort for the Sunday brunch and together time. Steven and Amanda had to leave Sunday afternoon. Steven had passed his A & P license and is working for a company that travels all over. They are expecting a baby girl in Nov.
About dinner time on Sat Judy and family (Jana, Jayne, Pat, Thomas and Catherine) arrived. It was good just being together and seeing all. After brunch on Sunday; swimming for the little ones and a nap for some we drove to Tims in Bayview to see his 385 ft tram. Thomas rode it 4 times.
Monday am Curtiss left and after breakfast with Judy and family; they headed west and we came home to rest. GREAT WEEKEND.
I'm working on some pictures. Love JOAN

Karen, Robert and I went to Luverne to see that the graves were in order. Luverne Flowers does a great job. We also had cleaned up the grave of our Great Great Grandfather's grave a couple of weeks ago. Took some time to find it as it is in the old cemetary just West of the Catholic Cemetary. Also couldn't find the Halvorson name, but discovered is was Halvor Rasmusson and our Great Grandfather evidently was the oldest son and become Rasmus Halvorson. According to the Rock County history book he homesteaded on what was Leonard Halvorson's Farm (where Myron lived) and I believe is still owned by Darlene Pfiefer. Karen and I are signed up for Saturday of the Hardwick reunion. Also the Anderson Wedding. When are people showing up and how many are staying at the Hotel. Also Judy are you flying into Sioux Falls, or going back with us and flying from Sioux Falls? Madison is only about 45 minutes North of Sioux Falls as you mentioned seeing your friend who has moved to thr frontier (SD) Also Joan, what are the details of your wedding in Madison next weekend?

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

To anyone who has ever had a mother, I wish you a Happy Mother's Day.

Janna called me at nine this a.m. and said I should be sure that I had some going out for coffee clothes on by ten. At nine, she was just passing thru Salem and surprised me. She didn't get her card mailed in time, so brought it down. I was thrilled. We got SEATTLE'S BEST coffee at Border's and then went to T J Max to pick up some bath towels and other household things. She gets the keys to her apartment this coming Friday at three. Jayne is coming down from Tacoma to help and I will go up on Saturday with a car load of stuff I had found here in Eugene. She is doing well. She and Rivers have had one mediation meeting and are awaiting some numbers for the house and pension before they can go any farther. He doesn't want this to happen, but they do sit down and talk and still say thank you and such to each other. In other words, they aren't heaving rocks and sticks at each other for which I am thankful.

JoAnn and I are going out to eat later today. She has done a lot of child sitting with her two local grandsons the past week and also making the family dinners...so she doesn't mind not seeing the group today.

Life is all right. Keeping busy with amusements and meetings. Not much else to report.
Hope everyone else is doing well.

Love to all,
