Patrick leaves for Iran today. While he's feeling great about it, I'm nervous. I mean, they don't have ATMs. Our credit cards won't work there. Beer is illegal.
Send him your prayers and good thoughts. I'll be updating Camp Smum (our family blog) as I hear from him. Hopefully he'll find internet access and we'll chat via Skype from our computers.

Good luck to both of you! - Sara
What's the purpose of the trip to Iran? How long will Patrick be gone? Sorry if I missed an earlier post about this. About a year ago I was privileged to meet a best-selling author who writes fiction and non-fiction books about the middle east. Maybe you've heard of Joel Rosenberg? Anyhow, now I'm very curious about Patrick's trip. Are you allowed to share? Tad
Hi Tad,
I am allowed to share, but sadly I don't yet have much to tell you. At least not yet.
Patrick teaches courses on the Middle East and he has long wanted to travel to Iran. So this year he just decided to do it. He found an Iranian travel agency and booked a flight on Air France. The travel agency arranges for a guide, accommodations and suggests an itinerary. They also took care of the visa which was required to allow him to enter the country.
He has traveled throughout Eastern Europe when it was under communist rule, to Turkey, Armenia, China and Israel, but I did find this trip the most worrisome simply because he was traveling alone and I had no idea what he would encounter. So far, from the limited contact we've had, it sounds like he is having an amazing time.
When he called me this morning, Miss Kitty and I were in the parking lot of the Safeway. He was on his cellphone (which works because he bought some special European sd card on ebay) and I'm thinking,"I'm talking to my husband half way around the world while I'm load groceries in my car." This is an amazing time we live in.
I have not heard of Joel Rosenberg, but I will Google him! Thanks so much for your interest.
